Jury Rapport Steenbergen stipendium

De laatste genomineerde is Bob Verbruggen ook van de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten St. Joost maar dan van de deeltijd-afdeling gevestigd in Den Bosch. Het werk van Bob Verbruggen riep bij de jury veel vragen op en bij de eerste beschouwing ook irritatie. Op de grond ligt een grote verzameling foto’s in verschillende technieken, van plot, tot laserprint, van fotokopie tot transferdruk. Als er met aandacht wordt gekeken blijkt dat de foto’s samen een verhaal oproepen van rafelranden, goedkope seks en pedofilie. Afzonderlijk zijn het ‘gewoon’ beelden van een man, een jongen, een kamer met goedkope nepbloemen zonder narratieve structuur. Het verhaal maakt de kijker, beïnvloedt door beelden op internet en nieuwsberichten op tv, zelf. Door tussen deze foto’s zelfportretten te leggen wordt duidelijk dat Verbruggen zijn positie als fotograaf onderzoekt. Thema’s als schaamte, beeldvorming, voyeurisme en de grens tussen fictie en realiteit staan centraal in dit werk. De jury prijst het lef van Verbruggen om te kiezen voor een no- nonsens presentatie die past bij de type foto’s die hij maakt en verzamelt.

Stone Cuttings 1 tm 6 /150 (collected in 2014-2015)

150 Stones extracted during performances at a former church (2014) /mental hospital (2015)/ Theater (2015). The participants where introduced to the painting 'Cutting the Stone' by Jheronimus Bosch and the myth of Lubbert Das. The painting depicts the extraction, by a man wearing a funnel hat, of the stone of madness, from a patient's head, using trepanation (In the painting Bosch has exchanged the traditional "stone" as the object of extraction with the bulb of a flower). The myth states that the 'Doctor' convinced Lubbert Das that he can cure him from his madness (or folly) by cutting it from his head and that this madness would have the shape of a stone. Fascinated by this idea of a Stone of Madness, and what it would look like, I then asked the participants to close their eyes, and to 'travel' back to an insane moment in their life. To visualize this moment in their head, as a place as a spot. Asking them..and what if this place, this spot in your head is a stone, this moment of insanity, is a stone. If you look at this stone, can you describe it to me..can you, draw your stone of madness.
